Tips & Tricks For The E71

E71
The E71 was one of the very best handsets to come out of Nokia factories in 2008 and the best ever in my book. So it is only right that we utilise its functionality to the absolute hilt and try and make the E71 even more efficient.

Here is a long list of must know tips and tricks for the E71. You might already know a few but if you are new to S60 and the E71 in particular, I’m sure this will make for a happy start to the E71 new year!

  • STICKY FUNCTION KEY – A quick double press on the bottom left ‘function’ key locks it. This is helpful in situations when you need to press a combination of keys or in applications like Gmail which can be controlled via the keypad.

  • 1-800-WHATEVER - To dial 1-800-WHATEVER: type 1800, hit Fn, then Shift twice, type WHATEVER, and press the Call/Green key to dial. (The idea is to type in the alphabet mode in CAPITAL letters ONLY). The alphabets will automatically be converted to numbers.

  • ONE TOUCH MUTE – You can simply mute a call by press the button between the volume keys present on the right hand side of the phone. Press it again to cancel the mute.

  • REMAP THE KEYS - There are times when you feel certain keys on the E71 are being wasted when they could have come in very handy. For example, the volume keys would work wonderfully with the web browser to scroll pages or in your music player and the mute key could work as select. Make that happen.

  • TIME & DATE – When the phone is in the locked state and the screen is blank, hit the Navi Button to display the time and date in a large font.

  • TEXT MESSAGES – When in the standby mode, hold down left soft key to read out new text messages.

  • ASSIGN SHORTCUTS - If you have a lot of applications installed on your E71, you might want to assign additional shortcuts to different applications by definying a set of keypresses with an application called Cute Keys. Learn how here.

As a follow up to the above tips, here are a few shortcuts that you should enjoy. I have highlighted some of the lesser known ones.

Tips and Tricks BlackBerry

The vast majority of BlackBerry devices have buttons on their side or sides that can be programmed by individual users to activate functions of the user's choosing.

For such a tiny little device, that BlackBerry smartphone of yours has an amazing amount of functionality packed in behind the scenes. But, unfortunately, realizing the true potential of a Research In Motion (RIM) device isn't always as simple as opening up a user guide or surfing on over to Google.

That's where we come in.

For months now, we've been offering up weekly BlackBerry tips, tricks and shortcuts for the novice, the seasoned expert and everyone in between. We've provided lists of our favorite BlackBerry software downloads--the majority of which are free, and some of which are open source. We even asked the bigwigs at RIM for their third-party application suggestions, and delivered smartphone battery-life advice, memory optimization methods, and innovative uses for your BlackBerry's Bluetooth.

This week, we bring you our favorite set of tips and tricks yet. After learning these techniques, you'll wonder how you ever got by without them. Two even come directly from Mr. BlackBerry himself, Mike Lazaridis, RIM president and co-CEO. A couple more originated from CIO.com readers who commented on our earlier Five Essential BlackBerry Keyboard Tips and Tricks article.

So sit back, whip out that BlackBerry and pay attention.

Three Can't Miss Messaging Shortcuts

Navigating Message Threads

We already covered the basics of BlackBerry messaging and keyboard shortcuts, after an informative chat with insurance company Aflac's smartphone guru. But these two lesser-known tricks are sure to lighten the load of any BlackBerry power user. (Thanks go to Sjaak Koole and another anonymous CIO.com reader for pointing them out!)

Heavy BlackBerry users know the pain of trying to catch up on an e-mail thread with multiple responses. You may have received the first response an hour ago, the second and third 15 minutes later and a fourth and fifth could have landed in your inbox just as you get to the first. Without a shortcut, you have to sift through the tons of messages that arrived in between the thread's various components. A much simpler way is to open the first message and then hit the J key to jump to the next response, and so on. You can also return to an earlier message in the thread by hitting the K key. (Note: If the subject line of the thread has been modified, you may not be able to find all responses using this shortcut.)

Bookmarking Messages to Return at a Later Time

Scenario: You're reading an important--and long--message from the boss when you're called away from your device by a coworker or family member in need. Have no fear, there's no need to scroll through paragraphs you already read when your return to the e-mail--at least if you use this shortcut. You can simply close the message, and when you're free again, just hit the G key after reopening it, and you'll be brought to the exact spot where you stopped reading.

Using Multiple Message Signatures Via AutoText

There are clear benefits to using a BlackBerry e-mail signature, but if you're like us, you probably don't want to use the same signature all the time--and there are likely instances in which you'd rather use no signature at all. Switching back and forth between signatures, or occasionally deleting one, can mean using different e-mail inboxes and accounts with separate signatures (or even repeatedly going into your BlackBerry Desktop Manager if you're on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) or BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) account) to make the necessary changes. That's a lot of legwork.

We suggest using pre-programmed AutoText entries to call up different e-mail signatures.

To do so, first delete the current signature you're using via the desktop manager software or your wireless carrier's website if you use BIS. Then click the Options icon on your BlackBerry home screen, choose AutoText, and then hit your Menu button--if you're using an 8xxx series device, Menu is located directly to left of the trackball. Select New from the options list and then fill in the Replace field with an easy to remember command, like "ZZ" or "XX," and the With field with an e-mail signature. You can use this method to create as many different signatures as you'd like by typing different commands into the Replace fields. (Note: When using the new AutoText command, make sure you hit Space after you type your AutoText--"ZZ + Space", for instance--or the message may not correctly display your signature.

Dialing Alphanumeric Phone Numbers on Full QWERTY BlackBerry Keyboard

Ever tried dialing a phone number with letters, instead of all numerals, using your BlackBerry's QWERTY keyboard? You know, 1.800.Comcast, for example. If so, you've likely experienced the frustration of being unable to key in the letters you want as part of your number--unless, of course, you already know this shortcut. It's simple really. Just type the numerals as you normal would--1,8,0,0--then hold the ALT key while dialing the letters, and you're good to go.

Access Default BlackBerry Apps With a Single Click from Home Screen

Many folks use their BlackBerry smartphones for messaging and Web surfing more often than they employ phone features. If you fall into this category, you probably want to disable your Dial From Home Screen option so you can access a variety of helpful Home Screen shortcuts. To do so, click your Phone icon on the Home Screen or hit the green phone button on your device. Then press your Menu key, pick Options, then General Options and change the Dial From Home Screen field from "Yes" to "No." Finally, hit the Escape key and choose to save your changes.

Now you'll need to hit your Phone icon or click the green phone button to dial a number and place a call, but you'll have access to all of the following shortcuts from your Home Screen via a single click of the corresponding letter key:

-- WAP Browser -- W

-- Alarm -- R

-- Tasks -- T

-- Calculator -- U

-- Options -- O

-- Address Book -- A

-- Search -- S

-- Notes -- D

-- Profiles -- F

-- Help -- H

-- Lock keypad -- K

-- Calendar -- L

-- Messages -- M

-- Browser -- B

-- BlackBerry Messenger -- N

-- Saved messages -- V

-- Compose -- C

Programming Application Switcher as a Convenience Key

The vast majority of BlackBerry devices have buttons on their side or sides that can be programmed by individual users to activate functions of the user's choosing. These buttons are commonly known as convenience keys.

The obvious choice for convenience keys are the applications that you use most frequently, but we found an even better use: Program one of your convenience keys to be your Application Switcher. The Application Switcher displays a taskbar or "ribbon" with all of your active applications, so you can switch back and forth between programs without closing them out or ever returning to your Home Screen. (When we asked RIM's co-CEO Mike Lazaridis for some of his most valuable BlackBerry tips, this was number two on the list. Keep reading for number one.)

To set a convenience key to the Application Switcher, simply click your Options icon on the BlackBerry Home Screen, choose Screen/Keyboard and scroll down to the Convenience Key Opens field(s). Then open the corresponding dropdown menu and choose Application Switcher. (Note: You can also access Application Switcher at any time by holding the ALT key and hitting Escape.)

Access Standby Mode Via Mute Key

If you don't employ a holster, pouch or other BlackBerry carrying solution that protects your device's keyboard when not in use, you're probably used to mistakenly dialing random numbers or sending the occasional accidental message. Throwing an unprotected BlackBerry or other smartphone into a bag or slipping it into a pocket is just asking for trouble. But it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, you can deactivate your BlackBerry's keyboard and other buttons with a single click.

Mike Lazaridis told us that this is the trick he recommends most frequently to BlackBerry users, because it's not only simple and remarkably valuable, it's also little-known. We knew the trick when RIM's co-CEO recommended it, but we couldn't agree more that this one's worth remembering.

To put your BlackBerry into Standby Mode, just hold the Mute key found on the top of your BlackBerry--at least if you're an 8xxx series user--for three seconds. Then you can toss your device in a pocket or purse without worrying about unintentional dialing or messaging. And to remove the device from standby, just tap the Mute key again briefly.

How Cellular Phones Work

Cell phones Operate Using Radio Frequencies
Cellular devices operate using radio frequencies much in the same way CB radios and walkie-talkies communicate, using radio signals in a certain frequency. For example AT&T Wireless devices operate using an 850Mhz frequency, while Verizon and Sprint Wireless use the 1900Mhz and 2100Mhz frequencies.

Communicating With Cell Phone Towers
Cellular devices send out a signal to cellular towers and look for signals from those towers. The tower therefore must be operating on the same frequency as the cell phone, for example 850Mhz for AT&T phones. By operating on the same frequencies, your device and the cellular towers are easily able to communicate. Once your call is connected to a tower, the call is then transmitted through a land line connection (Typically T-1 or fiber optic cables) found at the tower to its final destination. For example, you make a call in San Diego, the tower you are closest to you picks up your signal and sends it via landline to Montreal, where the call is delivered to the person you are calling. If the person you are calling also is using a cell phone, his phone's base station will receive the call and forward it on to his current tower's location. This entire process takes less than 1 second to complete.

How Phones Are Verified and Calls Are Routed
As you leave the range of one tower and enter the range of a new tower your phone's ID information is transmitted to the closest cellular tower and verified as active through your carrier. Each tower then sends a message to your phone's "home station" which is typically found where your home station area code is located. When a call is made to your phone, the home station picks up the call and routes the call to the tower signal you are near. If you change towers while on the call, such as when traveling away from the current tower you are using, your phone will switch to the new tower. All of this occurs in less than one second, ensuring no disruption is service.

Protocols Layers: Can there ever be too many?
Protocol layers are, to a computer or communications engineer, like mothers and apple pie. Who can be against them? Every modern computer protocol is layered, and all play at least lip service to the OSI 7-layer model (Physical, Datalink, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation and Application). The ideal of protocol designers is to focus on only one layer at a time, ignoring layers above and below. Paradoxically, however, this approach has resulted in useful protocols either failing to achieve market success or being delayed by several years in implementation.

Protocol layers are generally designed in a horizontal fashion, like an archaeologist who concentrates on one layer of history at a time. However, protocols are always used in a vertical fashion. Only by piling up the right layers can a working protocol stack be developed. Not only must a workable stack be defined, but anyone that you want to talk to has to use a compatible stack. It is an emphasis on the horizontal at the expense of the vertical that has caused many problems with protocols.

IS-41 is, today, a highly successful protocol, used around the world to provide national and even international call delivery, handoff and other roaming services. Yet it took much longer to get widespread implementations than it should have, and even today international roaming is seriously limited, all due to protocol stack problems. The IS-41 application layer is well defined, but the transport layer can be either X.25 or SS7. Beyond that, X.25 could be used in a level 2 (point-to-point) or level 3 (packet switching) configuration – and SS7 could be used with only the MTP layer or with both the MTP and SCCP layer. Four different configurations to run one application! And, if the two companies attempting to connect made a different choice, they would not be able to communicate without protocol conversion, even though their IS-41 applications were 100% compatible. I was involved in a field trial where first two, and then three, of the four possible transport protocols were used simultaneously. Needless to say, the trial had to be abandoned. Eventually, the industry settled on two major protocols (X.25 level 2 and SS7 MTP), and now uses X.25/SS7 protocol conversion equipment where necessary. Perhaps in the end it is a better system for all the confusion, but the extra flexibility resulted in at least a two-year delay in the widespread implementation of IS-41 services.

Today, IS-41 faces another challenge, with increasing interest from carriers in Asia, Australasia and South America. SS7 has become the de facto standard network protocol for IS-41, with X.25 relegated to a lesser role in network access. Yet the version of SS7 used is ANSI (American National Standards Institute), used in the US and Canada, not the ITU (CCITT) version of SS7 used in the rest of the world. What’s an international carrier supposed to do?

For now, the solution is to extend the US cellular signaling network to any country that wants to support international roaming using IS-41. This means these countries have to run two parallel SS7 networks: an ANSI network to support IS-41 and an ITU network for all other uses. The ideal solution is to use international SS7 gateways to convert from ANSI to ITU, but this is not possible with only the MTP layer in use (which allows for national addressing, not international). An agreement is needed on how to configure the SCCP routing layer – a piece of the vertical puzzle that has not yet been solved. SS7 is perhaps unique in the flexibility of its addressing capabilities. Through the definition of a new “Global Title,” new addresses can (theoretically) be added at will. But, this flexibility comes with a price. All companies have to either agree to support multiple addressing schemes or agree to compromise on a single scheme. And not only the players that wa nt to communicate must get involved, but the companies that control the STPs (Signaling Transfer Points that provide global title routing services) must also agree to configure and manage the new routing tables.

A protocol that has suffered tremendously from a lack of depth has been IS-124, a very rich application layer for the exchange of call detail information related to wireless systems. Its capabilities hold great promise for enhanced fraud and billing applications, along with a world of applications for marketing, customer service and network monitoring that have yet to be dreamed up. Yet, for all its promise, implementations of IS-124 are still in the very early stages. A large part of the problem is the lack of definition of a complete set of vertical layers. This allows companies to implement to the specification without being able to communicate. Eventually, this will be resolved when the industry finishes converging on a common protocol stack, but at least four years will have been lost since its initial publication in 1993.

The lack of success of wireless data is one of the mysteries of our time. It has certainly suffered from the lack of common vertical solutions. Perhaps the most successful form of wireless data is the use of an analog modem on an analog cellular channel. It is so successful because it will run any protocol that has been adapted to standard modems. Consequently, a huge variety of packaged vertical protocol stacks are available. Physically, these stacks are visible to the consumer as the floppy disks that Compuserve, AOL and internet service providers hand out like candy. Each disk contains a stack of protocols that allow access to their services using virtually any modem. Other forms of data transmission (RAM, ARDIS, CDPD, digital cellular, etc.) often require the development, configuration or acquisition of some part of the vertical stack by the user. Too often, users of new data protocols have to struggle to accomplish connection to a modem, which then results in achievin g only what they could have achieved with less hassle by using a modem with analog cellular to start with.

The internet may prove to be the savior of wireless data protocols. It provides a rich set of protocols for email, file transfer and browsing that are not reliant on modem-based access (although certainly compatible with it). Wireless data designers should latch onto this set of protocols because it allows their users to obtain a complete vertical stack while they only have to design the access layer. In protocol design, applied laziness is very important.

It is both essential for new data protocols to live within a well-defined vertical stack, yet it is impossible for any organization to define the complete stack. A major component of good protocol design is to define the existing building blocks that users of a hot new protocol will want it to rest on and those that it will support. Without this insight, and the application specific knowledge to make the right analysis, many important and needed new communications protocols will continue to underachieve.

Windows Mobile

Windows Mobile is a compact operating system combined with a suite of basic applications for mobile devices based on the Microsoft Win32 API. Devices that run Windows Mobile include Pocket PCs, Smartphones, Portable Media Centers, and on-board computers for certain automobiles. It is designed to be somewhat similar to desktop versions of Windows, feature-wise and aesthetically. Additionally, third-party software development is available for Windows Mobile. Originally appearing as the Pocket PC 2000 operating system, Windows Mobile has been updated multiple times, with the current version being Windows Mobile 6.1 (Windows Mobile 6.5 is due for imminent release as at 14 July 2009).

Microsoft projected in 2008 that shipments of devices with Windows Mobile will increase from 11 million to 20 million units, but it missed its initial goal in only selling 18 million licenses citing the delayed launch of certain smartphones.[citation needed] Windows Mobile's market share as an operating system for smartphones worldwide has fallen from 23% in 2004 down to 12% in 2008. Windows Mobile now has a worldwide smartphone market share of 14%. Microsoft licenses Windows Mobile to four out of the world's five largest mobile phone manufacturers, with Nokia being the exception. Some current estimates suggest that 80% of the 50 million Windows Mobile devices made have been built by one contract manufacturing group, HTC, which makes handsets for several major companies under their brands, as well as under its own brand. However, in February 2009 Microsoft signed a deal with the third largest mobile phone maker, LG Electronics, to license Windows Mobile on 50 upcoming LG smartphone models.

Successful Tips For Buying A Second Hand Cell Phone

If you have plenty of extra money in your pocket, you can buy anything you like. However, it's wise to know that so many brand new cell phones or hardly used phones are cheaply thrown out or stolen and resold to a second hand store. Sometimes you should know that buying a second hand cell phone will save you a lot of money. Needless to say, there are some seemingly authentic dealers who turn out to be quite dishonest both about the age, the origin and the condition of the phone. Just to help everyone, here is a handy list of items to check when buying a second hand phone.

Firstly, check IMEI. The IMEI is a code that identifies each phone. No two phones have the same number and manufacturers use this number to verify stolen phones and the amount of warranty that your phone has. Check that the IMEI number on the phone corresponds to the number on the box and receipts. If the numbers differ, there could be several reasons. The first is that the phone is a stolen one or the phone had been sent for servicing and had the main board replaced. Both situations are warning signs of a problematic phone.

Secondly, examine the original receipt. Get a receipt from the seller. If it comes from a reputable retail outlet, then you do not have to worry much. The receipt will be able to tell you when the phone is bought and how much warranty is left. Phones usually have only 1 year warranty. However if you see a receipt that is of dubious origin, be very wary. The receipt might be faked to make the phone look younger than it actually is. It might even be from a second hand dealer trying to sell off the phone again.

Closely inspect the exterior. This step is rather simple and should give you an idea of how old the phone is. Wear and tear will occur. Usually this means the buttons' paint will peel off. For PDA phones, the paint near the Stylus slot will also peel off. Ensure that the condition is what you expect to pay for. Ratings by sellers are very subjective therefore when no photos are uploaded, buy only when satisfied of the condition.

Test the keypad. Press all the buttons many times. Phones should be able to withstand multiple presses without giving away.

Do a detailed check of the functions. After you are done with the exterior, it is time to check the phone itself. Try every function that the phone has. A laptop or another phone will come in handy at this time.

Is there scratches on the display? Check the LCD display. Dead pixels are rare in phones unlike LCD monitors. But for phones, try to see if there are scratches on the screen. Scratches are expensive to repair and most people should buy a lcd screen protector to ensure the high resale value of their phone.

Check moving parts. Some phones have sliders, flippers. Try them to test if they are flimsy. Moving parts tend to be easily damaged by drops and frequent use.

How long is battery life? Batteries drop in performance as they age. However even a second hand phone should not use more than 10% of its battery in the time you are testing. This point is hard to check and the best solution is to get a personal warranty from the seller so that you can test the battery life later.

One last thing. Is there a Warranty? Get the warranty card. See if it has been sent in. Some manufacturers will not honor their warranty if the card has not been sent in within a few days of purchase. Some brands will also have their users register their warranty online. Prior to meeting the seller, get the IMEI number and do a warranty check online. Also ask the seller for a 7 days personal warranty so that you have time to interact and ensure that the phone is in working condition.

Why a Mobile Phone is Essential These Days

Mobile phone is gaining popularity faster than any celebrity. Everyday, a new phone is introduced to the market place. From Nokia to Samsung and even LG, there is a wide range of phones to choose from.

The reasons why people need a mobile phone these days:

1. For calling and text messaging

Yes, we need a phone to call someone or to send a text message. A call is probably the best way to communicate with someone but text messages would be an alternative to relay the same message when we cannot talk. Sometimes, it might be because sending a text message is cheaper than a call. Therefore, people prefer to send a text rather than making a call.

2. GPRS, WAP, HSDPA

These three features have the same function although HSDPA is the most advanced of all. We need either one of these features to get connected to the internet on mobile phone. Yes, surfing the internet is one of the reasons why people want to have a hand phone. We go online on phone to check emails, read blogs and catch up with family and friends through social networks.

3. Time killer

Surely you have seen mobile phones with games in it. This is a major attraction because people prefer to play a game or two while waiting for bus, waiting in line, waiting for someone, or simply because they are bored. Teenagers would find this more attractive than adults.

4. The desire to have the most sought after gadget

Let us face the truth, we all want something that everyone else has. If someone has an iPhone, we want to have an iPhone. How hard it is to admit that we will not let someone else to beat us to it, when it comes to buying the latest gadget especially mobile phones. Surely you want to be able to say, "My Blackberry is really useful as I check emails often."

5. USB Modem

Some people need a phone because of all the reasons above and because they also need to have a modem for connecting to the internet on laptop or PC. Yes, most of the advanced mobile phones have the ability to act as a modem. Mobile broadband is what they call it. Save more money when you sign up for a mobile broadband plan complete with the gadget you want.

6. MP3 player, alarm clock and timer

People also like to have a gadget that can combines all of these features into one. What would be better than a convenient hand phone? With the ability to play songs in MP3 format, teenagers can listen to songs whenever they want, turn it on real loud to have a party and even listen to the radio. The conventional alarm clock and timer are also being passed over in favour of a tool that has alarm clock and timer all together.

Surely different individuals have their own reasons as to why they need a mobile phone. Some people need more than one for different purposes. Whatever reason it is, hopefully your reason is worth it.

Buying a new phone can be a headache especially when there are so many new models to choose from. You might have a few favourite phones in mind but since you can only choose one, why not check out some of the cheapest mobiles. Alternatively, you might like touch screen mobile phones for the convenience.

Media

The mobile phone became a mass media channel in 1998 when the first ringing tones were sold to mobile phones by Radiolinja in Finland. Soon other media content appeared such as news, videogames, jokes, horoscopes, TV content and advertising. In 2006 the total value of mobile phone paid media content exceeded internet paid media content and was worth 31 Billion dollars (source Informa 2007). The value of music on phones was worth 9.3 Billion dollars in 2007 and gaming was worth over 5 billion dollars in 2007 (source Netsize Guide 2008).

The mobile phone is often called the Fourth Screen (if counting cinema, TV and PC screens as the first three) or Third Screen (counting only TV and PC screens). It is also called the Seventh of the Mass Media (with Print, Recordings, Cinema, Radio, TV and Internet the first six). Most early content for mobile tended to be copies of legacy media, such as the banner advertisement or the TV news highlight video clip. Recently unique content for mobile has been emerging, from the ringing tones and ringback tones in music to "mobisodes," video content that has been produced exclusively for mobile phones.

The advent of media on the mobile phone has also produced the opportunity to identify and track Alpha Users or Hubs, the most influential members of any social community. AMF Ventures measured in 2007 the relative accuracy of three mass media, and found that audience measures on mobile were nine times more accurate than on the internet and 90 times more accurate than on TV.

    Applications

The most commonly used data application on mobile phones is SMS text messaging, with 74% of all mobile phone users as active users (over 2.4 billion out of 3.3 billion total subscribers at the end of 2007). SMS text messaging was worth over 100 billion dollars in annual revenues in 2007 and the worldwide average of messaging use is 2.6 SMS sent per day per person across the whole mobile phone subscriber base (source Informa 2007). The first SMS text message was sent from a computer to a mobile phone in 1992 in the UK, while the first person-to-person SMS from phone to phone was sent in Finland in 1993.

The other non-SMS data services used by mobile phones were worth 31 Billion dollars in 2007, and were led by mobile music, downloadable logos and pictures, gaming, gambling, adult entertainment and advertising (source: Informa 2007). The first downloadable mobile content was sold to a mobile phone in Finland in 1998, when Radiolinja (now Elisa) introduced the downloadable ringing tone service. In 1999 Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo introduced its mobile internet service, i-Mode, which today is the world's largest mobile internet service and roughly the same size as Google in annual revenues.

The first mobile news service, delivered via SMS, was launched in Finland in 2000. Mobile news services are expanding with many organisations providing "on-demand" news services by SMS. Some also provide "instant" news pushed out by SMS. Mobile telephony also facilitates activism and public journalism being explored by Reuters and Yahoo! and small independent news companies such as Jasmine News in Sri Lanka.

Companies like Monster.com are starting to offer mobile services such as job search and career advice. Consumer applications are on the rise and include everything from information guides on local activities and events to mobile coupons and discount offers one can use to save money on purchases. Even tools for creating websites for mobile phones are increasingly becoming available.

Mobile payments were first trialled in Finland in 1998 when two Coca-Cola vending machines in Espoo were enabled to work with SMS payments. Eventually the idea spread and in 1999 the Philippines launched the first commercial mobile payments systems, on the mobile operators Globe and Smart. Today mobile payments ranging from mobile banking to mobile credit cards to mobile commerce are very widely used in Asia and Africa, and in selected European markets. For example in the Philippines it is not unusual to have one's entire paycheck paid to the mobile account. In Kenya the limit of money transfers from one mobile banking account to another is one million US dollars. In India paying utility bills with mobile gains a 5% discount. In Estonia the government found criminals collecting cash parking fees, so the government declared that only mobile payments via SMS were valid for parking and today all parking fees in Estonia are handled via mobile and the crime involved in the activity has vanished.

Mobile Applications are developed using the Six M's (previously Five M's) service-development theory created by the author Tomi Ahonen with Joe Barrett of Nokia and Paul Golding of Motorola. The Six M's are Movement (location), Moment (time), Me (personalization), Multi-user (community), Money (payments) and Machines (automation). The Six M's / Five M's theory is widely referenced in the telecoms applications literature and used by most major industry players. The first book to discuss the theory was Services for UMTS by Ahonen & Barrett in 2002.

    SIM card

In addition to the battery, GSM mobile phones require a small microchip, called a Subscriber Identity Module or SIM Card, to function. Approximately the size of a small postage stamp, the SIM Card is usually placed underneath the battery in the rear of the unit, and (when properly activated) stores the phone's configuration data, and information about the phone itself, such as which calling plan the subscriber is using. When the subscriber removes the SIM Card, it can be re-inserted into another phone and used as normal.

Each SIM Card is activated by use of a unique numerical identifier; once activated, the identifier is locked down and the card is permanently locked in to the activating network. For this reason, most retailers refuse to accept the return of an activated SIM Card.

Those cell phones that do not use a SIM Card have the data programmed in to their memory. This data is accessed by using a special digit sequence to access the "NAM" as in "Name" or number programming menu. From here, one can add information such as a new number for your phone, new Service Provider numbers, new emergency numbers, change their Authentication Key or A-Key code, and update their Preferred Roaming List or PRL. However, to prevent someone from accidentally disabling their phone or removing it from the network, the Service Provider puts a lock on this data called a Master Subsidiary Lock or MSL.

The MSL also ensures that the Service Provider gets payment for the phone that was purchased or "leased". For example, the Motorola RAZR V9C costs upwards of CAD $500. You can get one for approximately $200, depending on the carrier. The difference is paid by the customer in the form of a monthly bill. If the carrier did not use a MSL, then they may lose the $300–$400 difference that is paid in the monthly bill, since some customers would cancel their service and take the phone to another carrier.

The MSL applies to the SIM only so once the contract has been completed the MSL still applies to the SIM. The phone however, is also initially locked by the manufacturer into the Service Providers MSL. This lock may be disabled so that the phone can use other Service Providers SIM cards. Most phones purchased outside the US are unlocked phones because there are numerous Service Providers in close proximity to one another or have overlapping coverage. The cost to unlock a phone varies but is usually very cheap and is sometimes provided by independent phone vendors.

Having an unlocked phone is extremely useful for travelers due to the high cost of using the MSL Service Providers access when outside the normal coverage areas. It can cost sometimes up to 10 times as much to use a locked phone overseas as in the normal service area, even with discounted rates. T-Mobile will provide a SIM unlock code to account holders in good standing after 90 days according to their FAQ.

For example, in Jamaica, an AT&T subscriber might pay in excess of US$1.65 per minute for discounted international service while a B-Mobile (Jamaican) customer would pay US$0.20 per minute for the same international service. Some Service Providers focus sales on international sales while others focus on regional sales. For example, the same B-Mobile customer might pay more for local calls but less for international calls than a subscriber to the Jamaican national phone C&W (Cable & Wireless) company. These rate differences are mainly due to currency variations because SIM purchases are made in the local currency. In the US, this type of service competition does not exist because some of the major Service Providers do not offer Pay-As-You-Go services. [Needs Pay-As-You-Go references, rumored T-Mobile, Verizon provide one, AT&T does not as of 12/2008]

    Power supply

Mobile phones generally obtain power from batteries, which can be recharged from a USB port, from portable batteries, from mains power or a cigarette lighter socket in a car using an adapter (often called battery charger or wall wart) or from a solar panel or a dynamo (that can also use a USB port to plug the phone).

On 17 February 2009, the GSM Association announced that they had agreed on a standard charger for mobile phones. The standard connector to be adopted by 17 manufacturers including Nokia, Motorola and Samsung is to be the micro-USB connector (several media reports erroneously reported this as the mini-USB). The new chargers will be much more efficient than existing chargers. Having a standard charger for all phones, means that manufacturers will no longer have to supply a charger with every new phone.

Formerly, the most common form of mobile phone batteries were nickel metal-hydride, as they have a low size and weight. Lithium-Ion batteries are sometimes used, as they are lighter and do not have the voltage depression that nickel metal-hydride batteries do. Many mobile phone manufacturers have now switched to using lithium-Polymer batteries as opposed to the older Lithium-Ion, the main advantages of this being even lower weight and the possibility to make the battery a shape other than strict cuboid. Mobile phone manufacturers have been experimenting with alternative power sources, including solar cells.

    Handsets

There are several categories of mobile phones, from basic phones to feature phones such as musicphones and cameraphones, to smartphones. The first smartphone was the Nokia 9000 Communicator in 1996 which incorporated PDA functionality to the basic mobile phone at the time. As miniaturisation and increased processing power of microchips has enabled ever more features to be added to phones, the concept of the smartphone has evolved, and what was a high-end smartphone five years ago, is a standard phone today. Several phone series have been introduced to address a given market segment, such as the RIM BlackBerry focusing on enterprise/corporate customer email needs; the SonyEricsson Walkman series of musicphones and Cybershot series of cameraphones; the Nokia N-Series of multimedia phones; and the Apple iPhone which provides full-featured web access and multimedia capabilities.

    Features

Mobile phones often have features beyond sending text messages and making voice calls, including call registers, GPS navigation, music (MP3) and video (MP4) playback, RDS radio receiver, alarms, memo and document recording, personal organiser and personal digital assistant functions, ability to watch streaming video or download video for later viewing, video calling, built-in cameras (1.0+ Mpx) and camcorders (video recording), with autofocus and flash, ringtones, games, PTT, memory card reader (SD), USB (2.0), infrared, Bluetooth (2.0) and WiFi connectivity, instant messaging, Internet e-mail and browsing and serving as a wireless modem for a PC, and soon will also serve as a console of sorts to online games and other high quality games.

    Some phones include a touchscreen.

The largest categories of mobile services are music, picture downloads, videogaming, adult entertainment, gambling, video/TV.

Nokia and the University of Cambridge are showing off a bendable cell phone called the Morph.
